UNIVERSITAS PELITA HARAPAN
MODEL UNITED NATIONS 2015
5th ANNUAL SESSION OF IRF UPH MUN
"FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION"
UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (UN OHCHR)
ABOUT
The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) represents the world's commitment to universal ideals of human dignity. We have a unique mandate from the international community to promote and protect all human rights.
TOPIC
FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION
The topic of Freedom of Expression has been intensely discussed in recent years due to many factors such as globalization, uprisings, and oppressions. Carved into the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rigths along with article 18, 19, and 20, the United Nations clearly stated that everyone shall enjoy the freedom of speech, freedom of thought, freedom of opinion, freedom of expression, and freedom of preaceful assembly. The idea that these are the given rights for all human beings are far from the reality. Many individuals across the globe are being stripped away from these rights because their government are unable or unwilling to provide these fundamental needs of human being. Many recent events such as the multiple uprisings that occcurred in the Middle East called the Arab Spring, led to protests and even armed conflicts, the UN did little to none in terms of concrete actions that would guarantee the rights of individuals as stated in the Universal Declaration
of Human Rigths.
In this year's IRF UPH MUN, we would like to see delegates come up with solutions that would fulfill their
countries' stance on freedom of expression for individuals. Different countries will definitely have different ideas towards their definiton for the freedom of expression and its implementation. Therefore, we wish to see deliberation unto this topic while maintaining each national interest. Since this year IRF UPH MUN's theme is focused on the Middle East, we would also like to emphasize the discussion on Freedom of Expression in the Middle East.
